We are deeply saddened by the passing of our esteemed colleague, Don Scott. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Don’s family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

As a valued member of our firm for 35 years, Don’s professional excellence and personal warmth left a lasting impact. Known for his integrity, dedication, and collaborative spirit, Don embodied the values we strive to uphold every day.

After earning his BBA from Acadia University in 1979 and obtaining his CA designation in 1981 while working in Halifax, Don joined Welch LLP in 1988 and became a partner the following year. He later took on the role of Director of the firm’s Tax Group, where he gained national recognition for his deep expertise in Personal and Corporate Tax Planning. Don led the annual Income Tax Update course and taught extensively across Canada through CPA Canada and CPA Ontario.

In 2008, he was honored with CPA Canada’s Award for Excellence in Income Tax Practice and Education. He also contributed regularly to local newspapers on financial matters and appeared as a guest on programs such as Canada A.M. and the CTV News Federal Budget specials.

His leadership and contributions to the profession earned him the prestigious Fellow of the Chartered Professional Accountants (FCPA) designation – an honour reserved for CPAs who have demonstrated exceptional service to the profession and their communities.

Don was more than a leader – he was a mentor, a trusted advisor, and a steady source of kindness and wisdom. Over the course of his career he was an invaluable advisor to many clients playing a key role in the tax structuring of corporate groups in a myriad of business sectors. In addition to his encyclopedic expertise in the realm of tax, he also had a very strong business acumen that often led to creative solutions to complex planning matters. He was also a great mentor to many colleagues, supporting the development of strong technical and communication skills.

Outside of work, Don led a rich and well-rounded life. He was passionate about his family, hockey and softball, and was known for his enthusiasm for fine wine. A devoted fan of blues and classic rock, Don had a deep appreciation for artists such as B.B. King, The Allman Brothers Band, The Rolling Stones, and The Who. His diverse interests reflected a vibrant personality and an ability to connect with others on many levels.

Don’s legacy will live on in the work he accomplished and the lives he touched – he will be greatly missed, however we also know that his memory will always be a blessing.

Rest in peace, Don. Thank you for everything.
