It began over dinner, with a conversation about privilege. Stephanie Burch, daughter of Welch LLP Managing Partner Micheal Burch, had been asked what local issue she would focus on if she was given $100,000. Her immediate response was to support local homeless. Stephanie explained how she is amazed that in such a wealthy city, and a country as rich as ours, we still have so many homeless people needing support.
This conversation quickly turned in action, with Sock it to Christmas – A local charity established by Peggy Blair and shared over Twitter, about helping the homeless with one thing we all take for granted, socks. Micheal pledged 100 pairs of socks to this organization, to close off Welch’s 100 year anniversary.
Micheal contacted Sean Yip choy, from Mark’s Work Warehouse and within two days over 100 pairs of socks and six fleece blankets were donated! Thank you very much to Sean and Mark’s Work Warehouse for supporting such an important cause.
The women’s socks were donated to Parkdale Food Centre’s Soup and Socks program, and the men’s socks were donated to Shepherds of Good Hope and the Ottawa Mission.
All it took was concern from a passionate university student, one extremely empathetic employee, and Welch LLP’s staff commitment to community to pull together and give back this holiday season.
In addition to the 100 socks initiative, throughout the month of December, the staff of Ottawa’s Welch LLP office have been donating toys for children in need this Christmas through the Toy Mountain program. Another initiative has been weekly gift wrapping services and bake sales to raise funds for Victoria’s Quilts, an organization that provides handmade quilts to people living with cancer.
