Every Child Matters
A Message from Welch LLP Managing Partner, Jim McConnery:
We at Welch share concern, sadness and heartfelt condolences in light of the recent discovery of the remains of 215 indigenous children at the former Kamloops Residential School. Words do not do justice to the sheer scope of this tragedy. Our deepest thoughts, prayers and hope for healing are with the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation and all indigenous communities who are deeply traumatized and living with the wounds of this horrible chapter in our history.
This is a grim reminder of Canada’s dark past, and the long journey our country has in reconciliation and healing. Together we must actively participate in creating a path to healing that places our indigenous people at the center.
Resources provided during National Indigenous History month allow us to grow our understanding of Canada’s treatment of our First Nations. We have found it useful to look again at the 94 calls to action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, now almost six years old, including in particular calls 71 to 76. These calls to action can be found here.
